To compare energy prices and start saving

Renters concerned about lack of cheap energy suppliers - 02/10/2008

According to new research from the Department of Communities and Local Government, nearly 80 per cent of private renters are concerned about a lack of cheap energy suppliers.

Energy costs currently account for around 20 per cent of private rental bills, and landlords will be looking to appease concerns amongst potential tenants. With many buyers priced off the property ladder, demand for rental property has soared in recent months. Over 20 per cent of prospective tenants considered energy bills to be a top priority when choosing a place to live.

David Salusbury, chairman of the National Landlords Association (NLA), said: "Rising energy prices and leaner economic times mean tenants want to live in properties which are fuel efficient and don't waste money."

Private landlords must now acquire Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs), which provide information on the energy efficiency of individual properties. The EPCs last for ten years and work on an A-G rating, with A being the most efficient on the scale meaning that cheap energy is more accessible.

The new policy is designed to encourage landlords to pursue a greater level of energy efficiency in a bid to further reduce costs.
